The European Dance Festival Comes to Tartu

If you come to Tartu during July this year, you may be in for a treat. From July 20 to 24, Tartu will host the 48th European Folk Dance and Music Festival, Europeade. Here is a link to their web site. As we understand it, around 2,000 to 4,000 people will come for the event.

Where to stay in Tartu during the dance festival? Hmm … it may not be a bad idea to book your Wilde Guest Apartment now! Tartu hotels and Tartu hostels are nice, but we think you will like what we have to offer.

Wilde and Fine Dining in Tartu

I sat out on the terrace last night at Wilde Locale and once again felt the magic of the place. What makes it special? It is a combination of things: the setting, the cool evening air, the proportions, the food and service, and so on. If you visit when the weather is nice, this is a “must visit” destination in Tartu, and of course, it is just a short stroll from any of the Wilde Guest Apartments. I recommend catching the last bit of evening sun with an antipasto and a nice Rhone and then dinner.

Or you might consider ordering the Tuna Ceviche with a glass of Veuve Clicquot Brut fro 15 €. Nico (the head chef recommends it). I do too.

Hansa Days in Tartu!

It happens every year. Summer surprises us. One day it is cold and rainy. Then we wake up to 26 degrees and lovely sun. Tartu is wonderful in the summer. It is peaceful, but with plenty of events to keep visitors interested.

One of the main events is “Hansa Days”, which takes place each year in July. This year Hansa Days will be July 22 to 24. What are Hansa Days? Everyone comes to the center of town for a few days of outdoor eating, shopping and having fun. There are arts and crafts and all sorts of items for sale along the streets, on the town square and in the park. There are also rides and other fun things for children. And if you get a bit tired, you can slip away and sit outside at one of the many outdoor cafes, bars and restaurants.

And where to stay in Tartu during Hansadays in 2011? Well, you could stay at one of the hotels in Tartu. And Tartu hotels and hostels are quite ok. But you can’t get a better package including a great location in the center of the city along with services and connections than Wilde Guest Apartments. But of course, you knew that. Right?

A Busy Weekend in Tartu

Tartu comes alive in May with lots of fun events. This weekend has provided a good example. On Saturday, the flea market (kirbuturg) had its first weekend sale. It will open every Saturday from now until September and is located next to the Atlantis club. Wilde Guest Apartment correspondents were there checking out the scene.

While we were there, we heard a siren. It was the starting signal for the Tartu bicycle race that ran along the river on Turu Street. And off they went. It was a signal for us to find a seat outside on the town square for a glass of wine and a chicken wrap at Cafe Touffe. There was a breeze, a warm sun and very nice wine. I sat back a bit deeper in my chair.

Martin Lazarev is an Estonian photographer who lives in Rio. But Martin has lots of contacts and friends in Tartu and we feel a special connection with him here in Tartu. Now you can see his photos from this year’s carnival at Cafe Bianca (Kalevi 13). The photos will be on display until June 11th.

So what does it feel like to be in Tartu? You can some hints about the town from this nice photo montage from tripadvisor. As a long term resident, I think this is a nice glimpse (though there are many more images that I would love to see here). Over the last several months, a new, unusual and very popular series of entertainment events suddenly appeared on Tartu radar screen – stand up comedy. Comedy Estonia events are packed and the shows are very funny. So, if you are looking for some after dinner fun, check out their schedule. The Veinikelder at Wilde Locale Opens

There is no question that if you enjoy fine wines, at some point during your visit to Tartu, you should visit Wilde Locale on the corner of Vallikravi and Ülikooli Streets.

They have the best wine list in Tartu, the best sommelier in Tartu and now they have opened a wine store for you to take home great wines by the bottle or case — or enjoy while you are there. It is called “Veinikelder” (wine cellar). As I write this, the vinikelder is just getting started. But there are very encouraging signs that it will be a special place. We will follow how the veinikelder develops in this blog. Stay tuned.
